Loping and Looking — Art in MTR
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department and MTR Corporation joined hands to present the new calligraphy works created by Xu Bing for the "Xu Bing in Hong Kong: Square Word Calligraphy" commissioning art initiative. From March to September 2025, the artworks will be displayed at four MTR stations: Sheung Wan, Admiralty, Exhibition Centre, and Wan Chai, integrating art into the passenger journey, infusing everyday life with a touch of culture.
Sheung Wan Station features Xu Bing's writing of "Long time no see" and his signature "Xu Bing" in the form of Square Words. This unique writing system highlights the interplay between Eastern and Western cultures, aligning with Hong Kong's vibrant cultural tapestry, resonating with the Sheung Wan neighbourhood's embodiment of East meets West with a blend of old and new. The classic example of the Chinglish phrase, "Long time no see", presented in Square Words further highlights the intriguing fusion of Chinese and Western cultures. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, Xu Bing initiates dialogues with the public by saying "Long time no see", encouraging everyone to slow down and appreciate the artist's ingenuity.
At Admiralty, Exhibition Centre, and Wan Chai stations, the station names are presented in the form of Square Words by Xu Bing, reflecting different translational principles of place names used in Hong Kong. "Wan Chai" is a phonetic translation while "Exhibition Centre" is a semantic translation, and "Admiralty" is derived from the area's historical background. These three typical examples of translation approaches showcase the linguistic diversity of Hong Kong. The three stations are also major hubs for various cultural activities during "Super March". Xu Bing's works not only enliven passenger's journeys but also accentuate Hong Kong's charm as a centre for international cultural exchange.
