In addition to initiating a series of large-scale art projects for Hong Kong, Xu Bing also dedicates himself to nurturing young talent in the region. In March 2024, he held two sharing sessions that explored the relationship between contemporary art and the social context with the public, and shared insights as an artist to college students studying cultural and artistic disciplines.
In May 2024, during his residency and solo exhibition at the American Academy in Rome, Italy, Xu Bing led four students from Hong Kong in an internship programme. Under Xu Bing's guidance, they studied rubbing techniques and contributed to a 24-meter long rubbing of a section of the Appian Way. This opportunity for artwork production and installation allowed students to be inspired by Xu Bing's focused and perfection-seeking attitude, significantly broadening their artistic horizons.
From December 2024 to March 2025, the project's education partner Community Art Network (CAN) introduced Xu Bing's artistic concepts in 12 local primary and secondary schools, including special education institutions. They designed learning materials aligned with Xu Bing's concepts and oraganised creative workshops led by local artists, engaging over 1,000 students. The instructors gave an in-depth explanation on Square Word Calligraphy and encouraged the students to express their creativity through interactive participation, while learning the cultural characteristics of both Eastern and Western cultures. Students incorporated elements of Hong Kong and their personal experiences, resulting in a variety of unparalleled and unexpected creations.
Beginning in late March 2025, Xu Bing serves as a visiting professor in the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) for one year. During his tenure, he will collaborate with EdUHK teachers and students on a project tentatively titled “In the Frame of Sky and Ground”, to promote space art, STEAM education, and future learning.
