In 2018, the Art Promotion Office launched a three-year project, titled "Hong Kong House at Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale", in Sakasamaki, Tsunan, Japan, with the support of the Tsunan Town Government and in collaboration with the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale Executive Committee and the NPO Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Collaborative Organization. This project serves as a platform for residency, exchange and exhibition. The Hong Kong artists participating in 2026, Toby Crispy and Mire Yu, have created an exhibition titled 艹 田 人 STiTCH OUR iNNER LAND. The exhibition uses clothing as its canvas and collective embroidery as its language to weave together personal and collective memories that tell stories of humanity’s bond with nature across Hong Kong and Tsunan.

"艹" is the radical for grass and plants, "田" represents land, and "人" signifies people. Together, their forms resemble stitches — a metaphor for inviting everyone to reconnect humans and nature through the practice of slow-stitching.

The bustling rhythm of Hong Kong and the serene cadence of Tsunan, separated by thousands of miles, differ in climate, land and way of life. Placing "people" at the core, the artists travelled between the two places, gathering forty-nine stories about land, memories and daily life. They wove together urban and rural voices from the past and present, and cross-regional collective memories that transcend geography. Additionally, they transformed often-overlooked scents of nature, such as wild grasses and foraged plants, into an artistic installation, inviting viewers to engage in a dialogue with nature.

The Department of Art and Design of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong joined the Hong Kong House art project as the Internship Programme Collaborator in 2026. Through engaging with the participating artists and Activity Collaborators, students from the University gained practical experience and enjoyed meaningful cultural exchange.

Our Activity Collaborator, Make A Difference Institute (MaD), organises its community-based food culture project, Minna no Tsukemono. Centered on the theme of "flavour" that we cherish, preserved foods from around the world will be served with stories about what people hold onto dearly, no matter where they go.
