Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale is one of the largest international outdoor art festivals in the world and is held every three years. To coincide with Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2018, Art Promotion Office joined hands with the Festival to build a cross-region art and cultural platform at Tsunan Town of Japan, the "Hong Kong House". Designed by Hong Kong architects, Yip Chun-hang, Ng Chun-lun Otto, Kor Shong-jing Adam, Lau Chun-tat, Lee Lit-kwan, Lau Yip-fay and Yau Chiu-ting, it was opened to public on 29 July 2018. Three groups of Hong Kong artists, including Leung Chi Wo + Sara Wong, Wan Lai-kuen Annie and L sub were selected to conduct residency and feature their works in the Hong Kong House in 2018, 2019 and 2020 respectively, through exploring the rural nature and local culture.
The inaugural exhibition of Hong Kong House featuring Tsunan Museum of the Lost, a collaborative work of Hong Kong artists Leung Chi Wo + Sara Wong, was successfully held. It hoped to reaffirm and re-establish the forgotten people and events through the power of art. The artists visited residents and held workshops in Tsunan Town and had the privilege of collecting family albums from the residents. More than 50 old photographs mainly between 1960s and 1970s were selected. Leung and Wong interpreted and reconstructed the characters of unknown people through research, text descriptions, role re-enactments and posed photography, as a way to channel back to bygone, in an attempt to bestow a historical value and significance on the characters in this lost chapter of story.
Throughout the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2018, sound artist So Wai-lam from soundpocket, Fleur des Lettres's writers Chan Lai-kuen and Lee Chi-leung, art critic Ying Kwok and Chan Sai-lok from Art Appraisal Club, as well as students from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts also visited the Hong Kong House and created works and performances in response to their artist-in-residence experiences.
