Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department
Organised by Oi!
In collaboration with University Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong (UMAG)
Oi! is located in North Point, which is home to many immigrants from Fujian and is therefore known as “Little Fujian”. The Hokkien term kóo-tsá (meaning “archaic”) is used to describe something that gives a feeling of history and nostalgia, highlighting the archaic flavour that permeates the “Archaic Curator Series”.
As the second exhibition of the “Archaic Curator Series”, Oi! invited Dr. Sarah Ng of the UMAG as the guest curator to take three pieces of calligraphy inscriptions related to “kings” spanning ancient to modern times as discourse, including Stele of Mount Yi, “Sung Wong Toi” Inscription Rock and street writing of “King of Kowloon”. Local and overseas Chinese artists from across generations are invited to use different media and contemporary perspectives to respond to the Chinese calligraphy, engraved steles and ink rubbings, how it articulates history and identity construction, allowing the audience to appreciate uniqueness of traditional Chinese calligraphy.
This exhibition coincides with the exhibition of UMAG, allowing viewers to appreciate more works by other contemporary artists inspired by traditional inscriptions.
Guest Curator: Sarah Ng
Artists: Lee Wing Ki, Lee Yun Woon, Leung Kwan Kiu, Leong Lampo, Tso Cheuk Yim, Yeung Yuk Kan
Date: 28.9.2023 — 18.2.2024
Venue: Oi! Glassie
Free admission
