The Merchant and His Camel 2024 Painted fiberglass, gold foil and steel 93.2 x 51.5 x 135 cm
Inspired by a Tang dynasty figurine, this sculpture explores the camel as a symbol for the Silk Road trade route and the cultural exchange between East and West. While a base form is discernible, the sculpture discombobulates many elements of the original design in what appears to be a seemingly random manner. Yet closer examination shows otherwise — eyebrows are an upside-down moustache, wooden clogs adorn the feet, and scattered across its body are whimsical elements such as ice-cream cones and eaten apple cores.
