Gary’s exhibition in Hong Kong, “People Mountain People Sea”, marks a significant evolution from his previous works, which primarily depicted objects surrounding their subjects. In this new collection, Gary develops the concept further by asking how these subjects would look if they were both constructed from and replaced by various objects.

Prosperous Warrior showcases this exploration as well as the broader themes about the dichotomy between the sacred and the banal, and cartoon and realism. In a departure from his more monochromatic paintings, this series introduces heavenly backgrounds, purposefully elevating the most mundane of objects to a sublime status.
