In contrast to the more ethereal cloud paintings in the exhibition, Emerald Golem is part of a monochromatic set of works reflecting Gary’s desire to anchor the characters in the “People Mountain People Sea” series with a more graphic treatment. With this piece, Gary continues his exploration of abstracting figurative forms through the overlaying of objects. The use of similar tones serves to democratise objects by stripping them of their original intended purposes.
