These are flower bulbs — though some may mistake them for onions. Inspired by the woodcut illustration in Giambattista della Porta’s Phytognomica (1588), which linked the eyebright plant’s eye-shaped flower to the treatment of eye diseases, the artist envisions not a literal eye-shaped bloom, but a hidden eye within the bulb, waiting to see the world.

The pulsing light mirrors the opening and closing of an eye, serving as a metaphor for the experience of being open to and present in the world.

Each bulb is unique — some with darker skins, multiple eyes, or even horn-like protrusions — just as humans come from different races and possess diverse physical features. Their distinct shapes and forms celebrate the beauty of individuality, embracing what is so often dismissed as imperfect or unconventional.
