The artist's fascination with the pomegranate was inspired by a woodcut illustration in Giambattista della Porta’s Phytognomica (1588), which suggested that the fruit—which resembles a human jaw—could be used to treat ailments of the mouth or jaw.
Pomegranate seeds also play a pivotal role in the well-known Greek myth of Hades and Persephone. While the story is often interpreted as an allegory of love and life, this reading glosses over an unsettling truth: Persephone was forced to eat the seeds, which caused her to lose her freedom and be coerced into marriage.
When I was small, I was told "Lying would cause your teeth to fall out". This became a source of inspiration for the creation of Dancing Teeth—a playful yet unsettling response to the underlying horror of this myth.
