Artist Chan Wai-lap
Artist Biography

Chan Wai-lap’s creative practice encompasses painting, drawing, and installation. His works are often inspired by personal experience, memory, and everyday happenings. In recent years, he has focused on documenting public swimming pools to explore the concept of power dynamics—between public and private, self and others, and the relationships among these concepts.

Chan’s works have been exhibited in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, New York, Istanbul, and Abu Dhabi and more. Recent exhibitions include “I Will Always Be On Your Side” (Tai Kwun Contemporary, 2020), “The Lonesome Changing Room” (Art Central, 2021), “Some Of Us Are Looking At The Stars” (Hong Kong Museum of Art, 2023–24), and “Loveguard” (Gallery EXIT, 2025). He received the Award for Young Artist (Visual Arts) at the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards in 2019, and the inaugural Winsor & Newton × Paul Smith’s Foundation International Art Prize in 2024.
