Lu Yang is an acclaimed contemporary Chinese new media artist active in the international art scene. Lu specialises in integrating elements of imagery, animation, video games and pop culture through digital technology, and explores topics on neuroscience and religion, while expressing thoughts on our own "existence" through unique aesthetics. DOKU, short for "Dokusho Dokushi", meaning "we are born alone, and we die alone", is a hyperrealistic digital avatar Lu Yang created in 2020. In the exhibition at Oi! Glassie, DOKU were presented, as if the soul was travelling across the six realms of Buddhist reincarnation. Travelling freely across different geographical spaces and breaking physical limitations, DOKU is a vivid representation of the artist's views on time and space, objectivity and subjectivity, and the essence of life and existence at the philosophical and religious level.
In 2023, we invited Nadim Abbas, Choi Sai-ho and Lu Yang to participate in Oi! Spotlight and present their works at three old and new exhibition spaces. Using digital technology, materiality and installation as the media, their works aimed to trigger multiple senses and stimulate our imagination about geographical space, guiding us to travel across the realms of reality and virtuality and examine the diverse perspectives of modern life.
