Sunmoji will debut in late December in the outdoor space of Oi!. The original concept was inspired by a single ring, symbolising unity. The art piece comprises 24 curved segments, each unique in size and shape, inviting passers-by to pause, sit and interact. On special occasions, they will be reassembled into a cohesive whole, welcoming everyone into an inclusive circle to participate in various art activities.
Integrated into these segments are interchangeable inserts, featuring Sunmojis—graphic icons co-created by locals, students and artist Hikoko Ito—creatively weaving closer ties among neighbours, Oi! and the surrounding community. As sunlight slips through gaps in the tree canopy, ephemeral spotlights animate the icons. Each icon highlights a unique character or story of the community. This art project is aptly named "Sun-moji".
More than just a public art installation, Sunmoji serves as a living archive of the community and an open stage, continually evolving with new community contributions. It transcends the Sunmoji's theme and is limited only by the imagination.
