Mythical Dragon, See You Again!
My Wonderful Memories in Lam Tin
I grew up in Lam Tin. In the time I lived at Lam Tin Estate Block 16, every time I went yum cha at Sun Wah Chinese Restaurant, I kept my eyes on the majestic flying dragon relief on the external wall of Block 15 which was as high as six storeys. I felt like it would fly to the sky one day. Mrs. Chan, Uncle Wong and some friends shared their magical "experience", told me that it was a guardian goddess, it fought against the water sprite appeared in Lei Yue Mun. Also, they said it would fly to the sky every night and return to the wall in the next morning. I focused on observing the dragon's variations every time on my way to school. It came to my study in university, I realized that this dragon was installed in 1970 by Hong Kong Housing Department, Public Works Department at that time, as a milestone to commemorate the completion of the 500th block of public housing. Unfortunately, followed by the re-development in Lam Tin one by one, this unique and representative Lam Tin landmark was demolished together with Block 15.
Chinese Checkers are chosen as the idea for this installation as it gives a strong remembrance of our childhood accompanied with lots of sweet memories. Glass balls with different colours are used to re-interpret the dragon in a pixilated format. Circular stickers printed with the residents' names and addresses of Lam Tin Estate, as well as names of shops before the re-development are stuck around each glass ball, becoming part of the flying dragon pattern. Which block and room did you live before? Everyone can read about it here. May be you can find or meet your previous neighbours here, talk about the stories in those days.
This artwork reproduces the flying dragon in a new way. It lets old Lam Tin residents to review this lovely history, and enhances the sense of pride and belonging of new Lam Tin residents. Let's work together to develop a more harmonic and energetic new Lam Tin!
