The concept of woyou ("armchair travel") in traditional Chinese painting theory suggests that the pleasure of enjoying landscapes can be experienced not just through physical travel, but also through a spiritual journey across mountains and forests via images. But true woyou is more than a visual excursion. It depends upon the state of mind, described as chenghuai guandao ("clarifying one’s spirit to observe the Way"), through which one attains inner tranquillity and grasps the principles underlying nature and the cosmos.
This exhibition is the fourth in the "Archaic Curator Series". Oi! invited Dr. Chen Fong Fong, Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Hong Kong Baptist University, as the guest curator. Taking Mount Luofu—long celebrated as the "Foremost Mountain of Lingnan"—as its theme, the exhibition invited three local artists to showcase artworks such as calligraphy, painting and interactive digital installations, all of which guide viewers on a spiritual journey that transcends time and space.
Through three sets of contemporary art pieces, the exhibition revisits Mount Luofu and considers how Lingnan’s local memories, cultural traditions and artistic heritage continue to be interpreted and transformed in the present day. Chui Pui Chee combines calligraphy of the Taishang Laojun Shuo Chang Qingjing Jing (Scripture of Constant Purity and Stillness) with dynamic projections, creating a contemplative space for self-cultivation. Sam Cheng’s triptych screen Layers of Clouds and Mist unfolds a vision of layered blue-green mountains, inviting viewers to momentarily withdraw from the distractions of everyday life. Henry Lam’s immersive interactive installation Aperture to the Ethereal guides participants on a virtual pilgrimage, allowing them to experience the ceaseless transformations of the natural world through shifting digital landscapes.
Through the convergence of traditional media and digital imagery, Mount Luofu emerges not merely as a physical mountain, but as an imaginative realm connecting nature and self, history and the present, and memory and imagination. This exhibition seeks to reinvent Mount Luofu by proposing a renewed dialogue with the environments that shape human existence and life journeys, inviting reflection on the possibility of re-establishing intimate connections between humanity, nature and the self.
