7. Site for Artist-in-Residence and Exhibition Venue
Venue: Oi!
Location: 12 Oil Street, North Point, Hong Kong
Description: Oi! includes a historic building complex opened in 1908. It was a yacht club clubhouse which was on what was the waterfront in North Point at the time. Following land reclamation in the 1930s, the building underwent various transformation. It was initially converted into staff quarters for the Government Supplies Department and later served as a storage facility for the Antiquities and Monuments Office. Subsequently, the building was allocated to the Art Promotion Office for revitalisation and restoration. In 2013, the red-bricked Grade II historic building complex with tile roof was renamed Oi! and opened to the public as an art space.
The name "Oi!" is a play on words, as it sounds similar to its address in Cantonese. It also serves as a call for people's attention and represents a platform for individuals to realize their artistic dreams.
In order to provide more space for inspiring imagination, Oi! completed an expansion project in 2022. An adjacent outdoor space of over 3,000 square metres has been integrated with the original premises. The new space includes a new two-storey building with exhibition and multipurpose venues. By hosting various art exhibitions and public engagement activities, Oi! has further established itself as an artistic leisure space in the community and a cultural landmark in Hong Kong.
Exhibition Galleries: Oi! Warehouse 1 or Oi! Warehouse 2
Remodelled from the dockyard of a former yacht club, Oi! Warehouse has now transformed into a space where the public can experience art and broaden their imagination. The traces of its long history remain, allowing people to envision the future through them.
