The Art Promotion Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, in collaboration with the Shenzhen Fringe Art Center, has organised the “Ink Art Ensembles” Exhibition Series in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) from 2024 to 2026. Guest-curated by Hong KO and Eric ZHU, the series features five exhibitions across four cities: Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Foshan and Dongguan. The series includes one inaugural group exhibition and four thematic exhibitions, each pairing a Hong Kong artist with another GBA artist(s). The series focuses on ink art as the subject or primary creative medium for the Hong Kong artists, while the other GBA artists respond through diverse artistic forms. The aim is to create a platform for dialogue between artists from Hong Kong and the Mainland, highlighting contemporary artistic experimentation and innovative within the region.
The fifth and final exhibition of the series, titled “Illusory Landscapes”, is presented at the Guancheng Art Museum in Dongguan. Hong Kong artist Barbara CHOI Tak Yee integrates everyday Hong Kong streetscapes into the classical blue-green shanshui schema. For the first time, she employs artificial intelligence to render details within her scenes, extending static painting into a narrative of moving images. Fellow GBA artist WEN Qiuwen uses a fusion of paper sculpture and lantern-crafting techniques to stage a spectacle of fantastical creatures and landscapes within the exhibition space. Through the interplay of light, shadow and mirrored surfaces, she creates a perceptual experience that vacillates between reality and illusion. Together, the two artists have constructed “Illusory Landscapes”, taking viewers on an immersive, cross-media journey through landscapes and the imagination.
Free admission
The exhibition is also one of the activities in the Chinese Culture Promotion Series. The LCSD has long been promoting Chinese history and culture through organising an array of programmes and activities to enable the public to learn more about the broad and profound Chinese culture.
