Oi! invited the local art group Toolbox Percussion to curate the sound art exhibition “encounters: oi! oi! oi!” and offered visitors a unique and novel experience. Embracing the motto of “Transforming everyday objects into music”, Toolbox Percussion is dedicated to promoting the art of percussion music and has curated numerous exhibitions and performed in tours both in Hong Kong and abroad. Percussion music can be seen as a form of music that is closely intertwined with our lives – the primitive instruments we make as children using beans and plastic bottles, or the beats and rhythms that we can produce anytime, anywhere, with our bare hands can evoke our first experiences and memories of percussion rhythms.
Toolbox Percussion invited renowned composer Fung Lam to be the lead artist for the exhibition. In addition to creating new music compositions for the exhibition, Lam also collaborated with four participating artists, including Louis Siu, Chan Wai-lap, Cam Wong and Simo Tse, to explore more possibilities in shaping soundscapes. Drawing inspirations from often overlooked sounds and objects, combined with disassembled parts from percussion instruments and mechanical devices, the artists guided the visitors to rediscover the forgotten sounds from our daily lives and embark on a multi-sensory journey within the bustling city.
